County Democrats voice support for Sheriff Marx’s stance on enforcement

By Submitted on behalf of the Democratic Party of Winneshiek County by chair John Beard

An open letter to the good people of Winneshiek County and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds:

We support our county sheriff, Dan Marx, in what should be an easy-to-make decision for an elected official, to do his job and to lead his department accordingly by enforcing the rule of law and adhering to the Constitution of the United States of America when it comes to detaining people. Said Sheriff Marx, “For the person who could be held erroneously (or determined to be someone other than who ICE is seeking), there is a gross violation of rights at hand. Specifically, these detentions are violations of our Fourth Amendment protection against warrant less search, seizure and arrest, and of our Sixth Amendment right to due process.”

We have a safe community here in northeast Iowa because Sheriff Marx and the department he was elected to lead act in the best interest of Winneshiek County and therefore our state. We support and encourage the sheriff and his department to continue to serve the people of Winneshiek County in such a manner. Gov. Kim Reynolds is acting contrary to the rule of law and to the rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution; the document that sets a standard recognized around the world. Following the rule of law established by our Constitution safeguards our citizens and, when applied appropriately, holds elected officials in-check. We applaud Sheriff Marx’s office — and other law enforcement officers — who do their job “by the book” and who adhere to the rule of law. Constitutional adherence is bigger than any party. It is an American value.
