Citizens of Winneshiek County, please beware of more destruction of county government

By Elaine St. Clair, Decorah

The Winneshiek County Conservation Board, like numerous county departments, has been under attack for more than a year by the ruling majority on our county board of supervisors. I have been a front row observer for 18 months, and I have seen the elements of the campaign that was completed today by the three supervisors who vote as one with a clear agenda to destroy anything that gets in their way.

Monday, they took a sledgehammer to the Winneshiek County Conservation Board, which is the department that provides the public with many outdoor recreation and education opportunities while wisely managing our natural resources and encouraging land stewardship.

The three supervisors, have deconstructed and defunded the conservation board. In the 2024 budget, the board of supervisors cut a senior staff position. In the 2025 budget, they cut $10,000 from the conservation staff development budget.

On Monday, Dec. 9, 2024, they replaced the existing chair of the conservation board, Bill Odhe, with the chair of board of supervisors, Dan Langreck.

To be abundantly clear, Odhe is a retired 30-plus year career supervisor in wildlife management with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Langreck repairs cars.

As an observer in the front row, I saw emboldened looks of agreement between the three who vote as one with an agenda of destruction. Citizens, I encourage you to attend the next Monday morning meeting at 9:30 a.m. to see for yourself your representatives in action. Quality outdoor recreation could be a thing of the past in Winneshiek County.

With deep worry,
