A no vote will prevent waste of taxpayer dollars

By Don Arendt, Decorah

I encourage all Decorah city taxpayers to vote no on the municipal utility March 4 ballot. If approved it will be a green light for the city council to spend millions of dollars to try and seek Iowa Utilities Board approval. My major concern is the support a local electric utility can provide during an emergency.

During my 20-plus years of city service — 12 as mayor — I spent many hours in the emergency operations center during the 2008 and 2016 disastrous floods. Alliant Energy was very quick to respond both times. In 2008, Alliant’s power line was washed out by Bruening’s pond. This caused a blackout for the area northeast, including Walmart and Freeport. Alliant quickly brought in a large portable substation to supply electricity to that area. Disaster cover several communities. If we have our own utility, can we expect a quick response from other neighboring municipalities that may be affected? Alliant’s reliability is one of the best in Iowa. During our 44 years living in Decorah, we have had only a few short term electrical shortages. Alliant has been a positive, reliable force in Decorah for 100 years.

A no vote will prevent the city from wasting taxpayers’ dollars. The several million dollar gamble will only get the potential city utility before the state utility board. They have not approved one since 1974. Decorah has many infrastructure needs where money could be used.
