Stanley Humpal, 88, of Decorah, died Monday, July 31, 2017, at his home in Decorah. Mass of Christian Burial was at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, with Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Organist was Jeanette Dietzenbach. Cantor was Miriam Humpal. St. Wenceslaus Choir sang “Here I am, Lord,” “Amazing Grace,” “One Bread, One Body,” “Goin’ Home” and “How Great Thou Art.” Lectors were Kari Taylor-Evans and Karla Clay. Offertory gift bearers were Tressa Walton, Tara Roegner, Chelsea Humpal, DeAnn Constantine, Kelly Evans, Brooke Shatek, Hannah Humpal, Mya Clay and Mason Evans. Eucharistic ministers were Elaine Heying, Luke Malanaphy, Sarah Malanaphy and Dale Humpal. Casket bearers were Stanley’s grandsons: Brett Humpal, Rodney Humpal, Lucas Malanaphy, Colin Malanaphy, Jordan Humpal, Joshua Humpal, Dylan Humpal and Jake Humpal. Interment was at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville. Arrangements were handled by Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Spillville.

Stanley Stephen Humpal was born April 26, 1929, the son of James and Christine (Phillips) Humpal on the family farm near Conover in rural Winneshiek County. He attended country school in Conover through eighth grade. Stanley began farming after school with his family. He met Kathleen “Kay” Heying at a dance in Spillville and they were married Sept. 5, 1950, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina. Together they had eight children: Twins Kathy and Karen, Dale, Lonnie, Dean, Sally, Tina and Darryl. Stanley continued to farm until he and Kay moved to Decorah in 1994. Stanley enjoyed dancing and playing cards. He had a passion for farming his entire life and after he retired he still enjoyed driving around and checking the crops and livestock.

Stanley was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy(Alan) Taylor; parents, James and Christine (Phillips) Humpal; father and mother in-law, Peter and Agnes (Bohr) Heying; five brothers and their spouses: William (Emma) Humpal, Adolph (Ludmilla) Humpal, Paul (Rose) Humpal, Rudy (Rita) Humpal and Robert Humpal; three brothers-in-law: Hugo (Lucille) Heyin, Donald Timp and Larry Heying; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Langreck and Rosalyn Bodensteiner.
