Sharon Newman, 67, of Stewartville, Minn., formerly of Decorah, died Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, from cancer at the Stewartville Care Center, where she had been a resident since August of this year. A memorial service is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Kenneth Kimball officiating. A time of visitation will take place hour prior to the service at the church Saturday morning. A luncheon in the church fellowship hall will follow. A private family committal service is at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray F.H. in Stewartville. griffin-gray.com.
Sharon Schmidt was born Dec. 27, 1947, in Mason City, to Richard and Thelma (Plants) Schmidt. She grew up in Mason City and attended Mason City High School, graduating in 1965. Sharon married Darrell Newman in 1965, in Waterloo. They were later divorced. She was employed at Good Samaritan Care Center for a number of years and at other nursing homes in Decorah, before retiring in 2011. She enjoyed cooking, spending time outdoors, Facebooking and, most of all, spending time with her grandchildren and following their school and sports activities.
Sharon is survived by her two sons, Darran (Kristi) Newman of Papillion, Neb. and D.J.(Kim) Newman of Stewartville, Minn.; five grandchildren:
Marissa, Kara, Zach, Cheyenne and Jayden; her brother, Richard (Delores) Schmidt Jr. of Crete, Neb.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Frank Schmidt.
