Mary Jane “Jane” Hudson, 97, of Cresco, passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, at the Hawkeye Care Center-Cresco from complications following a fall that occurred Friday, Aug.19, 2016. Funeral services are Monday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m., at the Notre Dame Parish in Cresco, with visitation one hour preceding the service. Burial is in the New Oregon Cemetery following the service.
Mary Jane Hudson, or “Jane” as she liked to be called, was born in Howard County Oct. 6, 1918, to William and Mary Ann (Malek) Hyke. One of nine children, she and her family lived in Lourdes where she attended the Lourdes school. She was especially fond of her Lourdes church and school even though she and her siblings had to walk some distance to attend. She married Horace “Leeman” Hudson of Cresco April 21, 1937. She supported her husband in every way; together, they operated Hudson Plumbing Service for many years. In addition to being a homemaker and the secretary for their business, Jane’s prime hobby was sewing. She liked to recount that the priest at her Lourdes church and school gave her a sewing machine because she made her own clothes. Later she made her own patterns and created creative outfits for their only daughter. Jane loved to travel to visit her family, and she was especially proud of her two grandsons and her two great-grandsons. Loving people, she tried to remember their stories and connections; often she found that she was possibly related to them.
Surviving Mary Jane Hudson is one sister, Mrs. Genevieve Hruska Buker of Cresco, and one brother, Charles (Beverly – deceased) Hyke of Waterloo; her daughter, Shirley Jane (Dennis) Berglund of Greenwood Village, Colo.; two grandsons, Brad A. Berglund of Greenwood Village, Colo. and Bret L. (Pam) Berglund of Las Vegas, Nev.; and her two great-grandsons, Brock K. Berglund and Brant K. Berglund of San Diego, Calif.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Horace “Leeman” Hudson; her parents; four brothers: Benjamin (Eleanor) Hyke, Leonard (Mayme) Hyke, William (Alice) Hyke, Jr., and Clem (Elsie) Hyke, and two sisters, Agnes (Albert – Leeman’s brother) Hallman (Michael) Driscoll and Clara (Thomas) McKeown.
