Marie A. Ferrie, age 94, died on Monday, Nov. 6, 2023, at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, surrounded by her family.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Notre Dame Parish 11 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2024, for Marie, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. with Recitation of the Rosary beginning at 9:20 a.m.
Marie Agnes Ferrie was born at home near Schley, Iowa, on Sept. 9, 1929, 2nd child of Alois and Agnes (Opat) Hruska. After grade school she began working for her neighbor. That is where she met her husband, Joseph Ferrie. The couple married on Sept. 24, 1947, and throughout the years brought six children into the world John, Mary Jane, Patricia, Thomas, Linda, and Alan. Marie and Joe farmed alongside one another until moving into Cresco in 1989.
Marie had a gift for being able to freestyle knit or crochet a picture that she looked at. She was also a talented quilter; often giving them to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Marie smiled from ear to ear whenever her grandchildren and great grandchildren traveled home to visit her. She was a woman of faith. She was a member of Notre Dame Parish, where she belonged to the altar society, hosted monthly dinners, and helped on the funeral committee. Marie volunteered 35 years at Accura Healthcare of Cresco, was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and RHSHC Auxiliary, and Historical Society.
Those left to cherish her memory are her 6 children John Ferrie of Las Vegas, Nev., Mary Jane (Randy) Leach of Fredericksburg, Patricia (Tom) Milz of Stewartville, Minn., Tom (Leone) Ferrie of Cresco, Linda (Douglas) Smith of Decorah, Alan (SueAnn) Ferrie of Cresco; 15 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joseph P. Ferrie in 2017; infant brother Leonard; and sister Ruth Fenske.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Howard County Quilts of Valor or HOCA
