Margaret Mary Stortz

Margaret Mary Stortz, 90, of Waukon, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services are Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial is at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call one hour before services Tuesday at the church. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements. Honorary casket bearers are Michelle Dickson, Sara Hartson, Jessica Klang, Lisa Keel, Jamie LaVelle, Julie Stumbo and Mary Frances Burke. Casket bearers are Brian, Joe, Steve and Tyler Stortz, Andrew Dickson and Dan Schirm.

Margaret Mary Stortz was born Dec. 28, 1928, in rural Decorah, the daughter of Leonard and Vera (Stoskopf) Stortz. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, graduated from St. Patrick High School in Waukon, and received her teaching certificate from Luther College in Decorah.

From 1947-51, Margaret taught at Union Prairie Township country school, where she was paid $190 per month. She then went to work for Berg Implement and then Allamakee Implement, both in Waukon, as a bookkeeper before she retired. Margaret was a caregiver to her parents and did some babysitting for her nieces and nephews.

Margaret was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where she helped with bingo and was very involved with the women’s CEW. She enjoyed making pottery, painting pictures, working in her garden and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include two brothers, Francis (Kathryn) Stortz and James (Shirley) Stortz, both of Waukon; a sister, Patricia (Russell) Schirm of Marion; a brother-in-law, Ron Akre; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents and a sister, Elizabeth Akre.
