Lanny “Skip” Eugene Seaton passed away Dec. 23, 2017, at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. A memorial service is Wednesday, Dec. 27, at 1:30 p.m., at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Rev. Chad Huebner officiating.
Skip was born in Strahan Oct. 19, 1939, to Daniel and Gertrude (Marshall) Seaton and grew up in Carroll and Indianola. He graduated from Indianola High School and attended Simpson College for two years before being drafted into the United States Army. Skip and Carolyn were united in marriage Aug. 5, 1961, at the Fort Des Moines Methodist Church in Des Moines. They lived in Forest City, where he worked for Winnebago Industries and then was later manager of Fowser’s Men’s Clothing. Skip and Carolyn moved to Churdan and then later to Montezuma, where he worked for Brownell’s. While in Montezuma, Skip was proud to be the chairman for, as well as participate in, the Relay for Life 5K events. Skip and Carolyn retired to Arkansas in 2008 and then moved to Decorah in the summer of 2016.
Skip loved working in the yard, golfing, playing racquetball, reading – especially good Westerns, and grilled the best hamburgers! Skip liked to play board games and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. When he was young, he loved to play basketball and as an adult enjoyed following sports on television. Skip was meticulous with his lawn care and snow removal and spent hours making sure his garage was organized just right. He made friends everywhere he went and was known for kidding around. Skip was very patriotic and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 344 in Horseshoe Bend, Ark. Skip was a religious man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Skip is survived by his wife Carolyn of 56 years, daughter Sarah (Phil) Nowack of Fort Atkinson, son Marcus (Jennifer) Seaton of Ellsworth, grandchildren Leila, Paige, Bianca, and Yandell Seaton, his brother Robert (Mary Ellen) Seaton of Edison, N.J. and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Gertrude Seaton and brother Danny Seaton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163, c/o Decorah Vets Club, 104 State Street, Decorah, IA 52101.
