Gary Howard Hill was born Sept. 10, 1949, in Decorah, Iowa, to Tilman and Marie Hill. He attended Decorah area schools. Gary married Mary Ann Reed on April 8, 1971, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Gary and Mary Ann owned and operated the Sattre store for a couple of years before selling it in 1975. Throughout the years he worked for the county for a bit then went on to road construction and was a heavy equipment operator up until his retirement. Along with road construction he had farming in his blood and liked to rent some ground and plant crops with most of this being done on weekends with the help of his family and some great friends. He loved cooking for family and friends, having a quite large garden, some fishing when time allowed. He liked to socialize at Your Place over the years. Then over the past years he’s acquired quite the old John Deere tractor collection that he took great pride in with having them in parades in Decorah for the Nordic Fest and at the Mabel-Hesper Steam Engine Days.
Gary is survived by his children: Ron (Angie) Hill, Scott (Laura) Hill, Rodney “Tooter” (Renee) Hill, and Travis Hill, all of Decorah; grandchildren: Austin, Mason, Ethan and Henry Hill; brother: Tom (Kathy) Hill; sisters: Catherine (Gary) Compston, Tracey (Jim) Sutton, Lynn (Kevin) Thornton; brother-in-law: Kenneth (Susan) Hennings; sisters-in-law: Gloria (Leo Bartlett) Anderson and Polly Schadt; along with many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann; his parents: Timan and Marie Hill; father and mother-in-law: Gladys and Ray Hennings; sister-in-law: Donna Holthaus; and brothers-in-law: Orville Anderson, Bill Schadt, and Adrian Holthaus
