Emily Hoffert

Emily Marie Hoffert, 81, of Calmar passed away Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024 at Wellington Place in Decorah.

Emily was born Sept. 28, 1942 to Levi “Tony” and Ruth (Lewis) Taylor in Green City, Missouri, she was one of 14 children. She graduated from Grinnell High School in 1960. On Dec. 3, 1961, Emily was united in marriage with Robert “Jim” James Hoffert in Grinnell. Four sons were born to this union.

Emily enjoyed watching her sons sporting events and visiting on the phone with them. Throughout the years, Emily worked as a Sports Writer and Advertising for the Calmar Courier and was a very talented seamstress, making five 3-piece suits in one weekend. She loved fishing, especially at Lake Hattie in Backus, Minnesota, dancing with her husband, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones on TV, playing cribbage and bowling. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary and the Methodist Church Women.

Surviving Emily are her four sons, Chris (Loyce) Hoffert of Monona, Eric (Janice) Hoffert of Northborough, Mass., Jamie (Renee) Hoffert of Brooklyn, Iowa, and Steve (Tara) Hoffert of Fort Atkinson; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law.

Emily was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Jim” Hoffert on April 26, 1999; parents, Levi “Tony” and Ruth Taylor and her thirteen siblings.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Wellington Place in Decorah and to the Calmar Library.

A visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024 at Calmar Community Methodist Church in Calmar.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25, at Calmar Community Methodist Church in Calmar, with Rev. Richard F. Speight Jr. as the officiant. Interment will follow at Calmar City Cemetery, Calmar.

My deepest sympathy. ❤️. I worked with Emily at the Calmar Courier with Vicky Osmundson, Donna Brockmeyer, and Dan Driscoll. They were great people to work with.
