Ellen Halverson, 77, of West Union, died Tuesday, April 30, 201,9 at her home in West Union. Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 4, at the Madison Lutheran Church, 2658 Madison Road, Decorah, with Rev. Jeff Hansen presiding. Burial was in the church cemetery. Visitation was from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Ave in Decorah and also after 10 a.m. at the Church Saturday morning. The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Ellen Jane (Headington) Halverson was born Nov. 19, 1941, the daughter of Gerald and Evelyn (Vine) Headington in Decorah. She attended country school through 8th grade before graduating from Decorah High School. After high school, Ellen attended Winona State where she earned a bachelor degree in education. She married Harry Halverson July 18, 1970, at the First United Methodist Church in Decorah. She taught at Decorah Public Schools for many years before retiring and then substitute taught for another 10 years after retiring. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and canning. She was very involved in her circle at Madison Lutheran. Ellen loved keeping track of her grandsons’ athletic endeavors.
Ellen is survived by her sons, Jeff (friend, Dayline) Halverson, Waterloo and Keith (Tina) Halverson, Waverly; step-children: Larry (Bonnie) Halverson, Oconomowac, Wis.; Robert (Joyce) Halverson, Adel; Roger (Becky) Halverson, Cresco; Lyle (friend, Marcia) Halverson, Mabel, Minn. and Janice (John) Grafenberg, West Union; 17n grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, along with one on the way; brother, Jerry (Diane) Headington, Cedar Falls; sister-in-law, Brenda Headington, Decorah; along with many nieces and nephews.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; parents, Gerald and Evelyn (Vine) Headington; brother, Bill Headington; sister, Diane Headington; brothers-in-law, Sidney (Betty) Halverson and Duane (Inga) Halverson; step- grandson, Nathan Halverson.
