Barbara Sutton

Barbara Sutton age 86, of Decorah, died on Monday, Nov. 29, 2021 at Arlin Falck Assisted Living in Decorah.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021 at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church at 402 East Main St. in Ossian, with Rev. Daniel Knipper presiding. Burial will be at St. Benedict’s Catholic Cemetery, Decorah. Visitation will be after 11 a.m, at the church on Saturday. The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Barbara Ann (Funke) Sutton was born on April 18, 1935 to Herman and Rose (Zweibohmer) Funke in Ossian. She graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School. Following high school, she worked as a switchboard operator for the Bell telephone company. Barb married Vince Sutton on Sept. 17, 1955 at the St. Francis de Sales Church in Ossian. To this union four children were born: Maxine, Sue, Dave and Jerry. They made their home of 60 years northwest of Decorah where they raised their children. They farmed together and Barb helped with Vince’s farm contracting business.  She enjoyed cooking, gardening, shopping and visiting with friends. Barb was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah and was actively involved in the Catholic Daughters of America and St. Anthony Rosary Circle. 

Barbara is survived by her children: Maxine Johnson of Naperville, Ill., Susan (Dan) Gallo of Eagan, Minn., and Jerry Sutton, Decorah; daughter-in-law: Suzy Sutton, Decorah; 10 grandchildren: Kelley (Derek) Slovak, Ryan (Tramy) Johnson, Vinnie Gallo, Tanna Gallo, Megen Clark, Adam Sutton, Ethan (Linh) Sutton, Sam (Jessie) Drenth, Joe Sutton, Ruth Ann (Justin) McIntosh; eight great grandchildren: Nathan Sutton, Carson Clark, Connor and Carter Slovak, Kaden Johnson, Josie, Charlotte, and Kolter Drenth.  One brother-in-law: Mark Sutton, Decorah; one sister-in-law: Imelda (Emmet) Nesteby, Decorah.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vince Sutton in 2012; son: Dave Sutto; parents: Herman and Rose (Zweibohmer) Funke; sister: Marian (Deane) Soule; brother-in-infancy: Norbert; father and mother-in-law: Lawrence and Grace (Malanaphy) Sutton; and brothers-in-law: Mark (Marcella) Sutton and James Alberts.
