Albert G. “Al” Bernatz

Albert G. “Al” Bernatz, 77, of Decorah, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah. Memorial services are at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, with Rev. Richard Simon Hanson officiating. Inurnment is in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah, with full military honors by Decorah’s veterans and military organizations, and U.S. Army personnel.

Al was born Nov. 15, 1940, in Decorah, to Albert “Babe” and Gladys (Knutson) Bernatz. He graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1959 and attended Luther College.

Al was in the Army from 1963 to 1965, and was stationed in Hawaii. He worked for Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids for many years. After moving back to Decorah, he worked for Aase Haugen Senior Services for 18 years, retiring in 2005.

Al is survived by his half-brother, Howard Bernatz of Decorah; nephews, Michael (Denise) Bernatz, Winona, Minn. and Richard (Dodi) Bernatz, Decorah; nieces, Jana Cunningham, Goodyear, Ariz. and Kari (Gregg) Rude, Decorah; and cousins, including Joel Bernatz, Chelan, Wash. and Jean Fry, Marion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and half-brothers, Durwin Bernatz and Gerald Bernatz.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Aase Haugen Senior Services, 4 Ohio Street, Decorah, IA 52101.
