Adam Voss, 27, of Decorah, died Wednesday, July 11, 2018, in Decorah. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. Friday, July 20, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with Rev. Donald Hertges officiating. Deacon was Nick Francois. Organist was Mary Beth Bouska. St Benedict’s Choir sang “In This Place,” “The Servant Song,” “I Am The Living Bread” and “All is Well With My Soul.” Lector was Larry Hauber. Offertory gift bearers were Rod Voss and Mary Giese. Eucharistic ministers were Kari Ruff, Colleen Wetli, Wendy Novak, Chuck Humpal and Larry Hauber. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.
Adam Daniel Voss was born July 11, 1991, to Daniel and Carol (Ruff) Voss in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Adam was a 2009 graduate of Decorah High School. In high school he competed in cross country, swimming and track. He also participated in band, speech and drama. He excelled in his participation earning letters in academics, athletics, and fine arts. His freshman year, the activity director recognized him with the Tri-Athlete Award and he earned many more athletic, academic, and fine arts awards during his high school career. Notably he received Academic All-State cross country honors, multiple Decorah High School Renaissance Awards, as well as the Director’s Choice award in 2009. During his four years in high school, he accumulated enough college credit to graduate from Luther College in two years, graduating in 2011, majoring in mathematics and computer science. A whiz at computer technology, he was always ready to help others with their technology problems. However, his passion was sustainability and trying to minimize our impact on the environment. While at Luther College, he introduced worm compost bins into the dorms and lived in the sustainability house for a year. In 2010, he interned at the Sustainability Endowment Institute in Boston, Mass. Following graduation from Luther, he was a software engineer at TriTech Software Systems in Decorah for nearly four years. Joining the United States Peace Corps was a dream of Adam’s since high school and in July 2015 Adam left TriTech Software Systems to pursue this dream. Through the Peace Corps he was a math education and community development facilitator in Gare Village, Lushoto, Tanzania. He taught mathematics to 170 secondary education students. In September 2017, Adam joined Cerner Corporation in Kansas City, Mo. as a software engineer where he again excelled.
Adam is survived by his parents, Dan and Carol Voss of Decorah; sisters, Sara (Hank) DeDona of Kansas City, Mo. and Erin (Ben) Woita of Kearney, Neb.; grandparents, Milton and Kay Voss of Hawkeye; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Adam was preceded in death by his grandparents, Erwin and Eileen (Connor) Ruff and grandmother, Suzanne (Coveney) Voss.
