The Winneshiek Saddle Club will participate in the 2021 Pony Express Riders of Iowa fundraising ride Easter weekend.
Currently, the local Saddle Club members are selling raffle tickets for a 2021 Polaris 500 Ranger 4×4 or $2,000 in cash. Tickets are $1 each. A drawing will be held April 3.
The Saddle Club also will have a road block set up in downtown Calmar on Good Friday, April 2, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. to collect funds for Pony Express.
The Pony Express Riders of Iowa is a network of volunteers who fundraise in their own counties throughout the year. Each Easter weekend since 1967, saddle club members ride Pony Express style, carrying donations to Camp Sunnyside, an eight-acre camp located near Des Moines for Iowans with disabilities. The camp features two new 7,500-square-foot cabins with indoor plumbing and program space. Activities include swimming, rock climbing, horseback riding hiking and more.
The Winneshiek Saddle Club started fundraising in 1969, and rode for the first time on Good Friday, 1970.
