Winneshiek County Road projects looming

By Kate Klimesh,

In a report from Interim Winneshiek County Engineer Nick Rissman Oct. 2, the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors were briefed on projects soon finalized – including the box culvert replacement of Bridge 373 on North Bear Road, which is expecting backfill completion this week with hopes of opening the road again next week.

The county’s blades were out “all last week” maintaining the gravels following adequate rain for maintenance work to be done. Many crew members worked Saturday and Sunday a couple of weekends ago as well to get as much done as possible while the weather cooperated. He also noted the county’s LP, diesel and ice control rock contracts for the upcoming season were in and will be on the agenda at the Oct. 9 meeting.

Additionally, Rissman reported, “In looking at the five-year plan [for road work] we’ve already missed submittal deadlines for some projects listed for 2024.”

“It’s time to start talking to the other counties to see who’s interested in a shared agreement for an Engineer, or you won’t have time to let projects and stay on task,” Rissman concluded.
