Trio of Cresco men charged in rural Winneshiek burglary

By Seth Boyes,

The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office said three men residing across the county line in Cresco were arrested last week and charged in connection with a burglary reported earlier this month.

The three men — 27-year-old Dalton Lee Hagen, 39-year-old Travis Jeffrey Olson and 51-year-old Troy Manley Sobolik — were each charged with two counts of third-degree burglary. Hagen was also charged with violation of his probation, according to the sheriff’s office. The trio was arrested and booked into the Winneshiek County Jail at approximately 9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24.

The sheriff’s office said it received a report on Sunday, Jan. 5 of a burglary which had occurred at two locations along Middle Sattre Road in Canoe Township north of Decorah. Criminal complaints filed against the three men said the victim noticed on Jan. 4 that a padlock on a garage door had been broken. The complaint said items were missing from inside the garage and others had been moved toward the door as if the perpetrators might have planned to return for them. A trailer home on the property had also been broken into, according to the complaint, and a number of other items were reported missing.

The sheriff’s office was able to review camera footage from the area, which captured a minivan in front of the residence. The vehicle was found to be registered in Olson’s name, according to court documents, and investigators later executed a search warrant at Olson’s Cresco residence.

“Travis Olson admitted to the burglary and implicated Troy Sobolik and Dalton Hagen,” a criminal complaint said. “Olson also admitted to driving the vehicle.”

Additional search warrants were executed in neighboring Howard County at Sobolik’s home as well as Hagen’s residence. A criminal complaint said multiple items described by the victim were located and seized by law enforcement during the searches. Sobolik allegedly admitted to taking the items with both Hagen and Olson.

Howard County court records filed last week said law enforcement also observed illegal substances and drug paraphernalia while executing the search warrants, and a number of drug-related items were later seized by authorities, resulting in a variety of additional charges against the three Cresco men. Law enforcement also seized a fully-loaded 9mm Ruger handgun and 16 rounds of ammunition from Hagen’s home — Howard County authorities have charged Hagen with possession of a firearm by a felon.

All three men were released from the Winneshiek County Jail late last week after they each posted bond in the amount of $10,000.
