A rural Winneshiek County family is concerned about a campground which is slated to be erected near their home.

Mark and Andrea Ondrashek, who live approximately 5 miles southwest of Decorah, voiced their disapproval of a proposed campground, which is to be called the Neste Valley Recreational Area. The couple addressed the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors Monday, saying the campground is to be built about 500 feet from their back yard.

“In May of 2016, we built our home there, seeking the peace and privacy that rural living offers,” Andrea Ondrashek said. “However, in 2021, we were informed by the Winneshiek County Conservation Board that they planned to build a campground very close to our property.”

She also questioned the board of supervisors on Monday, asking whether the county needs a third campground.

“In this region, recreational tourism has a huge impact on Winneshiek County monetarily,” County Supervisor Shirley Vermace said. “It’s a long-term plan.”
