St. Benedict Students advance to state National History Day Contest

Seventeen St. Benedict 6th -8th grade students will advance to the virtual Iowa contest of the annual National History Day competition in April.

Seventeen St. Benedict 6th -8th grade students will advance to the virtual Iowa contest of the annual National History Day competition in April. The eleven projects advancing focused on the 2021 theme of “Communication in History: The Key to Understanding.” Projects advancing are: 
Exhibits:  Air Traffic Control: Essential Air communication by Andy Kruger; Navajo Code Talkers: Language Key to Victory by Tommy Sexton & Garrett See; FDR: Fireside Chats: Messages of Hope by Liz Bucksa & Audrey Essa. 
Performances: Nellie Bly: Communicating the Truth of Insane Asylums by Becca Kane; Harriet Tubman: The Key to Communicating Through the Underground Railroad by Olivia Huinker & Stella Pole. 
Documentaries: How Media Influenced the Vietnam War by Tommy Hammel & Reid Kuehner.
Papers: Susan B. Anthony & Elizabeth Cady Stanton: Communication in History by Emily Myers; Joseph McCarthy: Communicating Fear and Paranoia by Mason Myers 
Websites: Lewis Hine: Communicating Change With Photographs by Shelby Hageman & Abby Northup; The Walt Disney Strike: The Strike That Communicated Change in Animation History by Sophia Fahey & Camryn Holland; American Sign Language by Isabella Sailor.
The NHD website noted that “each year, National History Day frames students’ research within a historical theme. The theme is chosen for broad application to world, national or state history.”
