Sons of Norway to meet Sept. 19

The Sons of Norway Valdres Lodge Sept. 19 meeting will feature a presentation by Andrew Ellingsen, Vesterheim’s Director of Folk Art Education.
His presentation is titled “Building community and creating experiences inspired by Norwegian-American stories and folk art.” Vesterheim’s visitors regularly see the exhibits sharing the Norwegian-American immigrant museum and the beautiful examples of folk art in the collection, but sometimes miss out on the broad range of programming offered through Vesterheim Folk Art School. Ellingsen will share some of the Folk Art School’s history, their current offerings and programs to support folk artists, and their plans for the future.
Ellingsen taught elementary music and worked as an instructional coach in Iowa and Minnesota for nearly 20 years working with students ranging from kindergarten through graduate school.  He earned his B.A. at Luther College and his master’s degree in music education at the University of St. Thomas. In addition to his work at Vesterheim, Ellingsen makes braided pewter jewelry inspired by the cultural traditions of the Sámi people of northern Scandinavia.
The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 701 Iowa Avenue in Decorah. The event is preceded by a lodge meeting at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend; and those attending do not need to be of Norwegian ancestry. There will be refreshments following this presentation. All are welcome.
