School Facility Committee recommends project

By Roz Weis,

Decorah Community School District (DCSD) Board unanimously approved a recommendation from the
elementary school facilities committee for construction of a new elementary school to replace John
Cline School and West Side Elementary School.
During the Board’s monthly meeting Monday night, Facilities Committee Member Mark Jensen said he
and fellow committee members were unanimous in their recommendation to tear down the 60-year-old
John Cline School and rebuild a new school on the district-owned “Heivly Island” location. The
committee’s proposal includes a recommendation for a November bond referendum of not more than
$38 million to fund the school, which would serve pre-kindergarten through second grade
students.
Taxed with balancing wants and needs, Jensen said the committee, which is made up of nearly 20
community members, has been meeting for the past six months developing a final proposal for the board’s
consideration. He indicated the community’s growing awareness of the current school’s state of
disrepair, as exhibited in a recent survey.
