School board moves forward in effort to schedule November bond referendum

By Roz Weis,

A petition began circulating this week to take a multi-million dollar bond issue to the ballot box in November.

The district is looking to spend funds no more than $38 million to tear down the existing John Cline Elementary School building as well as rebuild, furnish and equip a new school on the district-owned property along Heivly Street – locally referred to as the Heivly Island property.

Approval of the petition for the general obligation bond project was given at a special meeting of the Decorah Community School District Board of Education Monday night.

Petitioners need to gather at least 673 signatures of support for the referendum to be put to voters – state law requires that number be a certain percent of the total votes cast in the most recent election.
