It’s been nine months since rural Decorah resident Karen Schluter told the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors she wants to see “action” on resurfacing Middle Calmar Road, but no action has been taken on the road since then; and Schluter and reappeared before the supervisors Monday morning, during their regularly-scheduled meeting.

“I’m kind of a habitual offender here, trying to keep it on the table, to have you folks not forget about the Middle Calmar Road,” Schluter said. “It just seems like it’s not a happy road to be on. Everyone that comes to visit always says how poor it is … and the worst road in Iowa. If you go to a lot of counties around Winneshiek County, their secondary roads are a whole lot better than our roads. So, therefore, let’s be active, people.”

Supervisor Shirley Vermace told Schluter that road repairs are an ongoing concern for counties in the northeast Iowa region, and she said each of the counties are struggling to find ways to cover the cost of road maintenance because of decreased funding. Schulter said she feels there has to be a solution.
