Sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance at residence on Merrill Road in Castalia Sunday, March 14 at 12:54 a.m. Several people had been assaulted and the subjects fled before deputies arrived. The subjects were located a short time later in Postville by the Postville Police Department. Leonardo Navarro Espinoza, age 35, Postville, was arrested and transported to the Winneshiek County Jail for assault with a dangerous weapon, domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury, assault causing bodily injury and assault with no injury. Francisco Esparza-Torres, age 26, Postville, was arrested and transported to the Winneshiek County Jail for serious misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury. This case remains under investigation with additional charges pending.

Joseph Gallagher Jr., age 63, Decorah, was arrested and booked into the Winneshiek County Jail Sunday, March 14 at 10:30 p.m. for operating while under the influence and criminal mischief. The incident was investigated on Highway 52 near 210th Street in Calmar Township.

Decorah Police
Decorah Police officers were dispatched to Roscoes in Decorah shortly after 10 p.m. March 20 for an assault that had taken place. Steven Johanningmeier, age 33, of Elgin, was arrested and charged with assault causing bodily injury.

Decorah Police took a report from Walmart in Decorah that on March 20 at 11:30 a.m. Katelyn Willitts, age 28, of Decorah, failed to scan $480.48 worth of merchandise at the self-checkout prior to passing the final point of sale. She was charged with 4th degree theft.

Decorah Police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation shortly after 11 p.m. March 20. During the traffic stop the officer suspected the driver was driving under the influence. After an investigation, Leah Sharyle Thompson, age 20, of Mahtomedi, Minn., was arrested for aggravated misdemeanor charge of operating while under the influence, first offense. Thompson was booked into the Winneshiek County Jail.
