The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle accident at approximately 3:23 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18 along County Road B32. A report from the sheriff’s office said 56-year-old Richard Dean Druecker of Volga was traveling along the road on a 2001 Harley Davidson FXDWG, and “it is believed the driver caught ruts in the asphalt in the center lane that caused the motorcycle to loose control.” The motorcycle entered the southeast ditch, causing Druecker and a passenger — 54-year-old Kristi Jean Kenkel of Strawberry Point — to be ejected. Druecker “seemed confused and did not remember crashing,” according to the report. He sustained a laceration to his left hand and reported rib pain on his left side, and his passenger reported mid-back pain. Both were transported to Winneshiek Medical Center by ambulance, according to the sheriff’s report. The two had been traveling with a group of motorcyclists, and others in the group took possession of Druecker’s motorcycle, which had an estimated $2,500 damage to its rear fender. No citation was noted in the report.

Possible minor injuries were reported after several teenagers were involved in a three-vehicle collision around 5:45 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19 near the intersection of Highway 52 and Middle Calmar Road. A report from the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office said a 17-year-old male from Ridgeway was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Impala east along the highway and was yielding to oncoming traffic before attempting to make a left hand turn onto Middle Calmar Road as two vehicle approached from the rear — the Impala’s turn signal mechanism was in the left position when deputies inspected the vehicle, according to the report. A 16-year-old male from Castalia was driving a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix and saw the turning Impala, braked and “went to the shoulder instead of rear-ending” the Impala — the 16-year-old told deputies “he has power steering and brake problems.” The third vehicle, a 2007 Chevrolet Impala driven by a 17-year-old from Ossian, side swiped the Grand Prix and struck the rear of the turning Impala. The driver of the second Impala told deputies his cruise control was set to approximately 60 mph and he “tried to brake but was ultimately unsuccessful.” The driving of the turning Impala was uninjured according to the sheriff’s report. The driver of the Grand Prix was listed as having possible injuries and was cited for failure to stop in an assured clear distance. The driver of the second Impala sustained suspected minor, non-incapacitating injuries and was taken to WinnMed. He too was cited for failure to stop in an assured clear distance. The sheriff’s report also listed a 14-year-old male from Ridgeway as uninjured but did not specify which vehicle the teen was inside. An estimated $10,000 of damage was reported to the 2015 Impala which was rear-ended, about $2,500 of damage was reported to the Grand Prix and around $5,500 of damage was reported to the 2007 Impala.

Jose Maria Bernal Jr., age 25, of Postville was booked into the Winneshiek County Jail at 8:09 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21 to serve four consecutive days.
