Fund established for Carlson Park Trail Development

The Decorah Park and Recreation Department and the City of Decorah have partnered to establish the Carlson Park Trail Development Fund, a special project fund held with the Winneshiek County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa. The fund will support the development of bike-optimized trails and amenities for all abilities within the park.

Thanks to the efforts of Chad Elliott, Nutrition Director and Culinary Specialist for Decorah Schools, the Decorah Community School District (DCSD) was recently awarded two grants – a Healthy Meals Incentives (HMI) grant in the amount of $149,998.00 from Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK), and a $8,000 Food Service II Grant to purchase local meats and vegetables.

Decorah Community School District has announced school will be dismissed two hours early on Friday, Aug. 25. Classes had been dismissed early on Wednesday and no classes were held Thursday due to the extreme heat.

The Iowa Legislative Services Agency originally estimated 14,000 students would apply for the 2023-24 school year and planned to spend around $107.4 million on the initiative. However, as 18,000-plus applications were accepted, it is estimated that the State could be more than $30 million over budget after calculations are projected on the actual numbers.
