The City of Decorah is notifying residents that the 800 block of Day Street will be closed between Rural Avenue and Pleasant Avenue on Wednesday, Jan. 3, through Friday, Jan. 5.
More than one-third of Christmas tree home fires occur in January

“As much as we all enjoy the look and feel of Christmas trees in our homes, they’re large combustible items that have the potential to result in serious fires,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at. “The longer Christmas trees remain in homes, the longer they present a risk.”
County Foundation grant deadline is Jan. 15

The deadline to submit grant applications to the Winneshiek County Community Foundation’s 2024 grant cycle is 5 p.m. on Jan. 15. Technical support will be available to applicants, and the online grant application can be found on the Community Foundation’s website at www.winneshiekccf.org.

Some area residents may recall that an antique gasoline pump originally stood in front of Torkelson Motors’ Elgin store. And, while that isn’t the case anymore, in the not-so-distant future, another pump may appear in front of the store. But, the new one will be pumping electricity instead of gasoline.
