Winneshiek County earns “Growing Together Iowa” mini grant

In the midst of record-setting food pantry usage throughout the state, Growing Together Mini-Grants will provide fresh produce and nutrition education to pantries in 2024 through Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s SNAP-Education program. Winneshiek County was on the list of 32 grant recipients from across the state.

Last of Decorah area woman’s killers is released from prison

A man convicted of murdering an Iowa woman in 1994 has been released from prison. Derek Smith was one of four people convicted in the death of Decorah area native Rebecca Schnitzler Hauser in Marshall County, Iowa. He is the final prisoner of the four convicted of her murder to be released.

February book discussions announced

Decorah Public Library staff are hosting five book discussions in February. The groups are open to the public and newcomers are encouraged to attend. Fravel’s defense seeks change of venue

Attorneys for Adam Fravel, accused of murder in the March 31, 2023 disappearance and killing of Madeline Kingsbury, filed a motion Friday, Jan. 19, seeking dismissal of first-degree premeditated murder charges.  Additionally, the defense filed a motion for change of venue, asking the trial be moved from Winona Count.
