Luther raises $1.2 million at annual ‘Giving Day’

Luther College raised more than $1.2 million during the ninth annual Giving Day on March 7. The money raised will support and enhance the Luther experience at the college through the Luther Fund, Luther’s unrestricted current fund that supports all students, faculty, staff and community endeavors on campus.

Friends of Pool 9 to celebrate 100 years March 9

This year, local non-profit organization the Friends of Pool 9 – Mississippi River Refuge, will celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the nationally-recognized refuge. To kick off its centennial year of existence, the group is holding a special event on Saturday, March 9, at TJ Hunters Banquet Hall in Lansing. The educational program and concert are open to the public at no charge.

Vikings come up short in overtime at State 3A Basketball Tourney

The matchups are set for the Iowa high school boys basketball tournament, and the top-seeded #1 Decorah Vikings took on #8 Williamsburg in 3A tournament action March 4 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The Vikings came out on top, 66-42, to advance to the state semi-finals on Thursday afternoon, March 6. The Vikes lost to Davenport Assumption in Thursday’s semi-finals, 61-53.

She recently turned 95, and with a degree in landscape architecture from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and decades of involvement developing nature centers near Milwaukee, she likely has greater experience than any other volunteer here in encouraging wild plants to grow. Jerri has logged more than 1,100 hours as a Northeast Iowa RSVP volunteer at the Decorah garden alone.

Emerald ash borer infestation alert issued

City Forester Sam Hogenson, in partnership with the City of Decorah Tree Board, is requesting Decorah residents help identify ash trees on their property. Over 400 ash trees have been removed from the City’s boulevards due to endemic emerald ash borer (EAB) infestation. Many ash trees had been planted to replace the American elms which were devastated by Dutch elm disease.
Decorah Rotary Club ‘binzebo’ project breaks ground at Carlson Park

In the cold early morning hours of Feb. 16, volunteer Travis Grawin dug a series of eight holes at Carlson Park. They don’t look like much yet, but they are the beginning of a new phase of development for the park, and the site of the Decorah Rotary Club Binzebo. The binzebo (a gazebo made out of a grain bin) will eventually become the entry hub of a brand-new series of bike-optimized trails that can connect back to the park’s existing two-mile loop.
