The Northern Lights Women’s Chorus will present its fall concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at Decorah Lutheran Church. The 50-member ensemble, composed of singers from Decorah and surrounding communities, will perform a variety of beautiful choral music with the theme “The Love of Bare November Days.”
Selections include “My November Guest,” featuring a haunting melody with words by poet Robert Frost; “Psallite Hodie” with harpist Julie Knox; “Days of Beauty” by Norwegian composer and pianist Ola Gjeilo; “O Pulse of My Heart (A Chuisle Mo Chroi),” an Irish love song featuring soprano soloist Emily Secor and Dr. Kacy Clopton on cello. Familiar tunes will include a jazzy version of “My Favorite Things” from “Sound of Music” and “There’s No Tune Like a Show Tune” by Jerry Herman. Iowa composer Elaine Hagenberg’s beautiful “O Love” and two gospel tunes, “Can’t Carry These Burdens Alone” and “In That Great Gettin’ Up Mornin’” will provide a joyful conclusion to the concert.
Harpist Julie Knox of Waukon will accompany the choir on three songs and provide special intermission music. Dr. Kacy Clopton, visiting professor of music at Luther College, is the cello accompanist. Emily Secor, a Luther College graduate and professional singer from Wisconsin, is the guest soprano soloist.
Northern Lights’ artistic director is Rachael Buresh, and Mary Beth Bouska serves as collaborative pianist. An intermission freewill offering will be taken, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Decorah Community Food Pantry.
Northern Lights would like to thank The Depot Outlet for a major grant to support its 2023-24 season, as well as the 15 other businesses and individuals who contributed to its fall fund drive.
Decorah Lutheran Church is located at 309 Winnebago St., Decorah, Iowa. For more information, visit the choir’s Facebook page.
