Each year during Nordic Fest the Town and Country Garden Club coordinates three beautiful yard and garden tours for the public to enjoy through self-tours at one’s own pace. Enjoy a brief reprieve from the bustle of the fest with the lush vibrancy these thoughtfully planted gardens offer.
This year the Garden Tour locations can be viewed on Friday, July 28, from 9 a.m. to noon and Saturday, July 29, from 1-4 p.m. free and open to the public. Freewill donations gratefully accepted for Garden Club projects.
Three tour locations
Sharon Drew, 106 Riverview Drive
Nestled on the west side of Decorah, Sharon Drew has cultivated a small informal English countryside garden. Grasses, trees, flowers and shrubs offer radiant colors, textures, layers and fragrances for the senses. Two bubbling fountains and a shade pergola offer a peaceful backdrop to sit and enjoy the garden’s wonders. Butterflies and various birds visit all year to enjoy the shade and beauty found here. Framed by a white fence Sharon’s yard
encompasses a serenity and calm that allows one to breathe and simply be.
Shirley and Kirk Larsen, 2419 Pole Line Road
Shirley and Kirk have been adding flower and vegetable gardens and fruit tree plantings around their new home since 2017. Gardens include an eclectic mix of traditional and native plants to complement the butterfly habitat, prairie plantings, and woodlands that surround their home. Motivated by their desire to care for creation, their gardening efforts focus on providing food and habitat for pollinators and birds. At mid-summer the floral blooms are at their peak.
Bluffside Gardens, 1020 Park Street
Kevan Klosterwill, landscape designer, and Brent Formanek, developer, are growing a botanical garden for Decorah. This sustainable tourism destination will showcase many different planting schemes and feature some of the unique plants and trees that call Eastern North America home. Come and see the first phase which was newly planted this spring.
