Several area students were recently recognized by the Hannah Lee Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The DAR Youth Citizenship Medal was established to foster among schoolchildren a greater appreciation of the qualities of citizenship Americans must possess if our country is to remain sovereign and independent. This medal is presented to a student who exemplifies the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism. Students are nominated for this award by their teachers. This year’s recipients are: Decorah Middle School 8th grader Kennady Riehle, daughter of Ron and Sara Riehle; North Fayette Valley 8th grader Jisela Schupbach, daughter of Nathan and Melissa Schupbach; and Postville 8th grader Toryn Timp, daughter of Jeremy and Denise Timp.
The Outstanding Work in American History Award is given to a high school junior or senior who fulfills the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism. Students are nominated for this award by their teachers. This year’s recipients are: Postville Senior, Quentyn Dennis, son of Darrin and Brenda Dennis; and North Fayette Valley juniors, Nick Hohenbrink and Scott Hohenbrink, sons of Mike and Nichol Hohenbrink.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With more than 177,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world’s largest and most active service organizations.
