Mike Klimesh, Iowa State Senator
Iowa State Senator Mike Klimesh (R-Spillville), representing District 32, was honored last week during a meeting of the Iowa State Association of Counties in Des Moines. Klimesh was presented with the Friend of the Counties Award by the Iowa State Association of County Supervisors.
Klimesh was chosen to receive the award by the ISACS Board of Directors, which is made up of six district representatives, an executive committee and ex-officio members who sit on the ISAC and National Association of Counties boards. Information provided by ISAC noted the award is not necessarily given out each year, “so it speaks to Sen. Klimesh’s work and relationship with county supervisors that they chose to present it this year with him in mind.”
“The Friend of the Counties Award is a recognition of exemplary public service with an emphasis on the partnership with county governments in Iowa,” said ISACS past president and Osceola County Supervisor Jayson Vande Hoef. “On issue after issue, Sen. Klimesh has ensured county supervisors have a voice. He is the type of legislator to dive into complex issues and try to reach compromise and solutions. From emergency management funding to compensation boards to EMS as an essential service to property taxes, Sen. Klimesh has been a partner of county supervisors in finding ways to best serve our communities. As chair of the Transportation Committee in 2024, he was instrumental in pushing cross-county vehicle titling, which included a fee modernization that will help cover the cost of providing the service in the treasurer’s office and remove the burden from property taxpayers.”
Joining the Iowa Senate in 2021 after more than two decades as the mayor of Spillville, Klimesh currently serves as the chair of the Iowa Senate’s Health and Human Services Committee, vice chair of the Local Government Committee and as a member of the Transportation and Ways and Means Committees among others.
