An Iowa State Patrol Trooper from Decorah has died of injuries sustained in an Oct. 14 accident. The State Patrol will have a procession for Trooper Ted Benda in North Iowa on Friday. The escort will travel from the State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny, traveling through Decorah on Highway 9 and turning north on Highway 76 and Highway 9 into Waukon, ending at Martin Funeral Home. Estimated arrival in the Decorah area is between noon and 1 p.m. Friday.
Multiple news outlets have reported an Iowa State Patrol Trooper from Decorah died of injuries he sustained in an Oct. 14 accident on Highway 51, six miles north of Postville, in route to a call in Postville.

The State Patrol will have a procession for Trooper Benda in North Iowa on Friday. The escort will travel from the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny, traveling through Decorah on Highway 9 and turning north on Highway 76 and Highway 9 into Waukon, ending at Martin Funeral Home. Estimated arrival in the Decorah area is between noon and 1 p.m. Friday.
The public is encouraged to line the route to show their support of Trooper Benda and his family. Law enforcement officials remind the public to stay at a safe distance from the roadway and refrain from joining the moving escort detail, which is limited to the escort detail. The procession will leave Ankeny at approximately 9 a.m., and the escort is estimated to take 4 hours.
The Iowa State Patrol will have a squad car on display as a memorial for the public to pay their respects to fallen Trooper Benda and family. Formal funeral arrangements, community visitation and processional route will be announced at a later time.
According to the Iowa State Patrol release, “The men and women of the Iowa State Patrol and Department of Public Safety are heartbroken to announce the loss of one of our own, Trooper Ted Benda ISP #313.”
Officials report Trooper Benda was involved in a single-vehicle crash on Thursday, Oct. 14, while in route to assist the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office with a wanted suspect. He succumbed to his injuries Oct. 20.
Trooper Benda joined the DCI in 2005, assigned to the Special Enforcement Operations Bureau in Marquette. He transferred to the State Patrol in 2016, assigned to District 8 in Mason City and most recently working out of the District 10 office in Oelwein.
The release continued, “He is not only a valuable part of the Department of Public Safety, but he was more importantly a loving husband, father, son, and brother. Trooper Benda leaves behind his wife, Holly, and their four young children along with many family, friends, and colleagues. Please keep the Benda family in your thoughts and prayers as they face this unimaginable loss. Rest in Peace, Trooper Benda…we have your 6 from here.”
