Fiberoptic may be significantly faster than other internet connections, but financing for fiber for Decorah is proving to be somewhat slow, according to Decorah City Manager Travis Goedken.
Goedken has been working on preparations and potential financing of a fiber plant for Decorah residents and businesses ever since he arrived three years ago, and city staff had been working toward the same goal for four years prior. Bids for the project were received in November, but the process has bottlenecked amid financing plans, Goedken said.
“We’ve done bid letting – we have received six bids – and are running one through the pro forma, the take rate and the financing,” Goedken said during Monday’s city council meeting. “Right now, it is still a bit in limbo, there are lot of moving parts that have to come together at the right time.”
According to Goedken, of the six bids, the two lowest are not being considered due to inconsistencies in the bids, and the city is currently using the third lowest bid — $10.5 million — as the benchmark for its financing efforts.
