1923 ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO: It’s official – the drilling has stopped at the Bakke Lease No. 1. The Decorah Pioneer Oil & Gas Company made the announcement last week. The drilling started more than a year ago, and went down to a depth of 3,200 feet, but some time ago the drillers encountered troubles as the top of the eight-inch drill bit broke off, leaving the bit at the depth of 3,200 feet. It was reportedly “an accident that could not be helped, and drillers had hoped the bit could be removed.” A meeting of the 500 stockholders was called for next week, and they can decide what to do moving forward.
…Managers of the Winneshiek County Fair are in correspondence with the champion horseshoe pitcher of the United States to try to arrange for him to make an appearance at next month’s fair.
…The little stone church located five miles southeast of Fort Atkinson near Festina is gaining some fame as “the world’s smallest house of worship”. It is becoming a popular motoring objective in NE Iowa.
…The well-known young butcher in town, by the name of L.H. Seim, has purchased the Morrison Grocery and Meat Market on the city’s West Side.
…Marshal Tavenir broke up a crap game in an old building north of Water Street the other Thursday afternoon. Seven young men were taken before Justice Barthell and were assessed fines of $5.95 each. A grand total of $6.26 was in the pot, and the investigating officer took the cash. All the funds will be used to help the local school fund, with 95 cents on each of the fines going to pay the justice costs.

1933 NINETY YEARS AGO: A recent hailstorm ruined the crops on many Winneshiek County farms. It was reportedly the most severe storm in many years and hit the southern Winneshiek County area hard.
…The Happy Hustlers 4-H Club met recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Bakken. A demonstration on canning strawberries was presented by Evelyn Vine and Marion Woodhouse.
…The farm home on the Mrs. Anna Hegvedt farm six miles north of Decorah, which was burned to the ground a few weeks ago, will soon be replaced. Construction of a new home will begin in a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Hegtvedt are renters on the farm.
…Mrs. A.M. McIntosh, daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Strayer, pioneer settlers in the county, passed away last month. Martha, as she was named at birth back in 1853, was reportedly the “first white child born in Winneshiek County Iowa” She was age 79 at the time of her passing on June 20, 1933. She spent some of her years in the Freeport area.
…An accident that might have proved fatal occurred at the W.F. Anderson farm about two miles west of Castalia last Sunday morning. Mr. Anderson was attacked by their bull, the animal breaking his leg and bruising him quite badly. His son, Vernal, came to his rescue. The doctor from Ossian was summoned.
…The girls of the Ridgeway region are getting enthusiastic about forming a Kittenball League. They are hoping to get in some practice with the teams already organized in Decorah and Cresco.
…The City Council has voted in favor of a new city well and new sewage disposal plant.
…The Frankville Road is now being hard-surfaced.
…P.P. Nockels and Son, proprietors of the pool and billiard parlors at 210 West Water Street, have received a permit to sell beer.
…The annual rally day for girls from the area 4-H Clubs was held at Decorah City Park last week. There were more than 125 in attendance. The Castalia Go-Getters were the first club to register. All the girls scored well and seemed to have a good general knowledge of their 1933 projects.
