Recently several area students were recognized by the Hannah Lee Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
The DAR Youth Citizenship Medal was established to foster among schoolchildren a greater appreciation of the qualities of citizenship Americans must possess if our country is to remain sovereign and independent. This medal is presented to a student who exemplifies the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism. Students are nominated for this award by their teachers.
This year’s recipients are: Decorah Middle School 8th grader Leah Garcia-Prats, daughter of Chris and Stephanie Garcia-Prats; North Fayette Valley 8th grader Anabel Murray, daughter of Steve and Nicole Murray, and Postville 8th grader John Melcher, son of Tom and Jeni Melcher.
The Outstanding Work in American History Award is given to a high school junior or senior who fulfills the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism. Students are nominated for this award by their teachers. This year’s recipients are: Postville senior, Connor Adam, son of Clark and Stacy Adam; and North Fayette Valley junior, Malachi Rothlisberger, son of Michelle and Shane Rothlisberger.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With more than 177,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world’s largest and most active service organizations. DAR members are committed to volunteer service having served more than 12.5 million hours in communities throughout the world during the past three years.
