Nathan Compton, project manager with ISG design firm, met with members of the Decorah City Council and the city’s parks and recreation board Monday night to discuss possible cost-saving changes to the city’s plans for a future sports facility. Portions of the project are slated to be installed this year near the city dog park along to Old Stage Road. Compton explained the proposed facility’s pair of multi-use ball fields would not have to be infilled at a cost of $100,000, but instead, could be leveled 2 feet lower than the paved areas surrounding the field, which designers said would create a nestled atmosphere and give spectators an increased line of sight. The proposed leveling was met with support from the council and parks board members.
