The Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution to update an easement and allow Dairyland Power Cooperative of La Crosse, Wisconsin, to run new fiber-optic cable from Decorah to Harmony, Minnesota.
Elizabeth Mueller, with Right of Way Agent for Dairyland Power, presented the six-month project to the supervisors during a public hearing Monday in the county courthouse annex. The easement is for approximately a quarter-of-an-acre located just south of Decorah.
“What we’re doing is installing a new static wire,” Mueller said, adding that the project will run from June to December. “This new static wire has 72 strands of fiber optic running through it. We’ll take the old wire off and replace it with the new static wire.”
Dairyland Power is requesting updated easements, saying the prior easements don’t match the new technology, and Mueller said the new easements also allow third party rights which would allow the cooperative to sell the fiber-optic cable to a communications company for use with broadband internet.
