Council approves $15,000 budget for MEU informational materials

By Denise Lana,

The Decorah City Council voted 5-1 Monday, Dec. 2, in support of a resolution allowing the city’s sustainability commission to spend up to $15,000 on flyers, mailers and similar materials regarding a proposed municipal electric utility. The question of whether to establish an MEU will be put to local voters on March 4, 2025.

The creation of a local MEU was posed to the public in 2018 and failed by three votes. The topic of a proposed MEU was discussed again earlier this year, following rate increases by provider Alliant Energy — council members in mid-March considered joining a coalition who opposed the rate increases.
