Contractors aim to stay on track as construction at WinnMed continues

Construction on the new clinic and surgical additions at WinnMed in Decorah have largely transitioned indoors. The hospitals' board of trustees recently approved changes to the project schedule and costs as crews take on aspects of the project which required additional time and resources. Contractors hope to keep the project timeline as close to its original schedule as possible and plan to credit the hospital for the recently approved extension if work is completed as initially expected. Organizers handling WinnMed’s Transforming Tomorrow project said they hope to keep construction of the hospitals’ newest additions as close to their original schedule as possible while navigating necessary changes.

The $50 million improvement project includes expansion of the county hospital’s clinical spaces as well as its surgical services and obstetric unit — work on the OB unit was the first aspect of the Transforming Tomorrow campaign to reach completion, and staff held an open house in the newly renovated space during December of 2024. WinnMed is also constructing a two-story addition estimated to add 30,000 square-feet to its facility on Montgomery Street. Plans call for specialty services on the addition’s lower level and family practice spaces on the second floor. In addition, the hospitals’ operating rooms will be both remodeled and expanded and an endoscopy room will be added.

Contractors with the construction project told WinnMed’s Board of Trustees last week they expect to modify the project’s schedule by a matter of four weeks as they address issues which have recently arisen — such as added time and expense to properly address water connections as well as running tens of thousands of feet of electrical conduit in certain portions of the hospital.
