Area voters to cast ballots this week

By Seth Boyes,

Voters in the city of Decorah will be heading to the polls this week to decide whether to authorize the city to establish a municipal electric utility. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 4. Voters in Decorah’s Ward 1 and 2 will vote at the Winneshiek County Courthouse Annex — 201 West Main St. in Decorah. Voters in Ward 3A and 3B can cast their ballots at First Lutheran Church — 604 W. Broadway St. in Decorah, and voters in Wards 4 and 5 can fill out a ballot at Good Shepherd Church — 701 Iowa Ave. in Decorah.

The March 4 referendum requires a simple majority in order to pass. Voters are reminded to bring an Iowa driver’s license, non-driver ID card, passport, military ID or voter ID card to the polls as proof of identity. Voters who have changed addresses since they last registered to vote will also need to provide proof of residency.

Some Winneshiek County voters will also be eligible to cast ballots that same day in a Postville Community School District special election. The Postville School District is looking to fill an at-large seat on its board of education. Candidate Mary Huinker is the only candidate listed on the sample ballot posted by the Winneshiek County Auditor’s Office. Voters within the Postville School District will also be asked to approve a public measure renewing the district’s revenue purpose statement.

Winneshiek County residents living within the Postville School District may fill out their ballots at the Ossian Community Center — 123 West Main St. in Ossian. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day.
