The investigation into a mid-September vandalism/hate crime incident in Decorah has culminated with search warrants being served at two additional residences in Decorah resulting in more arrests in this case.
On Oct. 3, 2023, a 17-year-old juvenile male from Decorah was charged with: criminal mischief 2nd degree (Class D Felony) criminal mischief 3rd-hate crime (D Felony) trespass with intent to commit a hate crime (Aggravated Misdemeanor), and possession of marijuana-(Serious Misdemeanor). He has been referred to Juvenile Court Services. On Oct. 17, 2023, an 18-year-old male from Decorah, identified as Jose Macias Torres, turned himself in to law enforcement on warrants charging him with: criminal mischief 2nd degree (Class D Felony), criminal mischief 3rd-hate crime (D Felony), and trespass with intent to commit a hate crime (Aggravated Misdemeanor) He was booked into the Winneshiek County Jail.
The Decorah Police Department and Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office were notified of damage to multiple buildings in Decorah, as well as areas on the bike path, skate park and streets/alleys. The areas were defaced and vandalized with spray paint during the overnight hours. The vandalism included hate speech that the local authorities deemed as “both shocking and criminal.” Reports of the crimes were taken serious by both agencies, working diligently together, investigating, interviewing, serving search warrants and collecting evidence in the case.
An 18-year-old from Decorah, identified as Caeden-Philip Andrew Kenya Nyanjenga, had been previously charged with criminal mischief, 2nd degree (Class D Felony), criminal mischief, 3rd degree, hate crime (D Felony, and trespass with intent to commit a hate crime (aggravated misdemeanor).
