Beacon error, farmland access conflict, suspend 360th Street vacation

Relying on imperfect technology can cause problems, and that fact was proven after the Nov. 6 meeting of the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors, when interim County Engineer Nick Rissman discovered that the Beacon web service contained inaccurate information regarding 360th Street in Highland Township.

“I was a young kid and thought I knew the world,” he said with a chuckle. “I had good grades, could have made the honor roll, just didn’t want to. After leavin’ school, I turned 17, and a week later, I got off the bus in San Diego, and there was a Chief Petty Officer usin’ cuss words I didn’t even know, and I thought I knew’em all.”

FEMA finalizes Winneshiek’s floodplain designation

“If the county does not adopt the floodplain ordinance, the people would not get flood insurance,” continued Phillips. “The law still says they have to have it, but, if the county doesn’t adopt the floodplain ordinance, they can’t get it. So, for some, that would mean they can’t get that mortgage.”

McShanes honor state bird with mural by Cedar Rapids spray-paint artist

Many business owners add murals to their buildings’ exteriors to call attention to their businesses or to celebrate art or the artists that paint them. But, Kathleen McShane said she and her husband, Mike, who own Gear Elkader and the Goldfinch Inn at 201 North Main Street in Elkader, added a mural to the second story of the back of their building to give that part of their business a bit of a facelift.
