Echoes of the Past: Vikings are football champs

It was big news back in the fall of 1974 when the Decorah Vikings football team made it to the state playoffs (and beyond). Spoiler alert: They won the championship in a big game on the Iowa State University campus in Ames in late November of 1974.

Sixteen Decorah High School students have been selected as members of the 2024 All-State Music Festival, following auditions in late October. The weekend festival is Nov. 22 and 23 on the Iowa State University campus in Ames.

Sheriff’s Office issues warning of scam calls

Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office has issued a release involving a scam in the area.
The release states local residents have reported receiving phone calls claiming to be Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office staff or representatives.

Petersburg announces resignation after 17 years on Decorah School Board

Decorah School Superintendent Tim Cronin said the first step in filling Petersburg’s seat on the board will be publishing notice of the board’s intention to fill the vacancy by appointment. That notice is expected to appear in today’s Decorah Leader.

The once abandoned schoolhouse is just off Locust Road north of Decorah, and the Dahlens have been working to revive it ever since they purchased the property in 2018. The former Clay Hill School No. 5 — also known as Matter’s Schoolhouse — has been painstakingly transformed into a quaint guest house/Airbnb.

State education director denies DHS athletic conference appeal

Decorah Community Schools will continue looking for an athletic conference after Iowa Department of Education Director McKenzie Snow affirmed the Upper Iowa Conference decision to deny Decorah High School’s request to join the conference. After mediation between the Decorah School District and Upper Iowa Conference failed, the Iowa Department of Education accepted the mediators’ recommendation to deny Decorah’s request.

Steffen is new Fest President

The Nordic Fest Board of Directors recently announced the appointment of Cole Steffen as the 2025 Nordic Fest President. The Board voted unanimously to uplift Steffen to the role, following his three years of service as Nordic Fest Board Treasurer.
