Last of Decorah area woman’s killers is released from prison

A man convicted of murdering an Iowa woman in 1994 has been released from prison. Derek Smith was one of four people convicted in the death of Decorah area native Rebecca Schnitzler Hauser in Marshall County, Iowa. He is the final prisoner of the four convicted of her murder to be released.

February book discussions announced

Decorah Public Library staff are hosting five book discussions in February. The groups are open to the public and newcomers are encouraged to attend. Anyone interested should call the library at 382-3717 to learn more or to reserve a book. Those wishing to be added to any of the five groups’ email distribution lists are asked to email ktorresdal@decorahlibrary.org. Funds for multiple copy sets were provided by Friends of Decorah Public Library.

Tourism grant awarded locally

DHS students excel at District Speech Contest

Decorah High School speech students participated in a District Large Group Speech Contest on Saturday, Jan. 20, held at Decorah High School. Coaches reported the performers had a great showing, earning 27 Division I ratings out of 30 total entries.

Coffee and Creativity program continues

Decorah Public Library and ArtHaus are continuing the Coffee and Creativity program series designed to help build community while being creative. Organizers said participants can make simple craft projects while chatting over coffee from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month.

Nordic Choir homecoming concert Feb. 6
