Council approves $15,000 budget for MEU informational materials

The Decorah City Council voted 5-1 Monday, Dec. 2, in support of a resolution allowing the city’s sustainability commission to spend up to $15,000 on flyers, mailers and similar materials regarding a proposed municipal electric utility.

Members of the Decorah City Council stressed on Monday the city is not currently seeking to establish a municipal electric utility, but they are hoping to complete some paperwork which would allow them to explore the possibility of doing so in the future.

Members of the Winneshiek Saddle Club and the Decorah Human Powered Trails group initially declared a stalemate after facing off at a Nov. 21 Decorah Parks and Recreation Board meeting. However, a split vote from the board decided the matter Tuesday night.

Plans finalized for new Decorah ballpark

A former Allamakee store owner was found guilty Tuesday, Nov. 19 of starting the blaze which consumed her Waukon business as well as an adjacent building — a dog also died after being rescued from a stairwell during the fire.

A jury found Mindy Jones guilty of first-degree arson the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 19. Due to press deadlines, an update on this week’s verdict will appear in the Nov. 28 edition of the Decorah Leader.

ISAA fashion show is more than fabric

“We all come from different backgrounds, different countries, different traditions,” said Pakistani student Sarab Aftab, vice president of ISAA. “The world is at war right now — a lot of our countries have economic and terrible conditions and are living through terrible times right now. What we are trying to do at Luther is bring our students from around the world and unite them on one stage and give them the opportunity to share their beautiful cultures and traditions, and that is what our goal for the fashion show is this year.”

Fravel guilty on all charges in Kingsbury murder

According to testimony from family and friends, Kingsbury’s seven-year on-again off-again relationship with Fravel was beyond salvaging and she planned to move out of the home they shared in Winona, Minnesota. Kingsbury had found a new place to live and had a new love interest, but she disappeared Friday, March 31, 2023, after she and Fravel dropped their children off at day care and arrived back at their shared residence.

Jury selection begins in Jones arson trial

Jury selection in the upcoming arson trail against Mindy Jones was slow but steady Tuesday at Allamakee County Courthouse in Waukon. Jones faces charges of first-degree arson and misdemeanor animal abuse stemming from the fiery destruction of a Waukon commercial building in February of 2022 which caused the death of a family dog.
