Tuesday, February 7, 2023 4:35 pm

The Viking contingent will have lots to cheer about this weekend as Decorah will send four events to the state swim meet.
Decorah qualified one athlete in one individual event and all three relays to the state event. Last year, Decorah sent just one individual to compete in three events to the big dance.
Events are qualified based on having the 32 fastest individual and to 24 relay team times across the state. There are no classes in swimming; all schools compete against one another.
The state meet is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11, at the University of Iowa Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City.

Viking boys get road win over Waukon

Tuesday, February 7, 2023 4:34 pm

Going on the road in conference action, the Decorah boys’ basketball team (11-5, 6-3 NEIC) took care of host Waukon (2-16, 0-9 NEIC) Friday night, 56-49.
It was a slow start for both teams with a 2-2 battle going into the sixth minute of the opening period before either team scored again. By the end of the first, Decorah had edged the Indians, 10-7. That lead was extended to 21-16 at halftime. Waukon battled back in the third to tie it at 32-all with eight minutes left to play. While the Indians managed to have tied the game, the Vikings never relinquished the lead in the final period to take the victory back to Decorah.

Controlling the tempo of the game early, Decorah pulled out to a 16-8 first quarter lead. Uncharacteristically the Vikes stumbled offensively in the second, allowing the Indians back into the contest at halftime but still maintained the advantage 24-20. That lead was pushed to 42-35 in the third and Decorah put the game away in the fourth, outscoring Waukon 19-7 in the final eight minutes.

Turnovers, fouls hurt SW girls

A slow second half hurt the South Winn girls’ basketball team (6-14, 6-10 UIC) as the Warriors hosted MFL MarMac (13-7, 11-5 UIC) Friday night, falling 54-37.
The teams were nearly three minutes into the game before the first points fell through the hoop in the form of Morgan Kleve free throws. Four early SW fouls, two each on Morgan Kleve and Josie Tieskoetter, forced the Warriors to play with a younger squad on the floor, but kept ahead of the Bulldogs 6-5 after the first eight minutes. MFL MarMac built a slight 19-17 halftime lead and continued to roll in the second half.
