Final period forces TV boys out of postseason

While the late stops were there, the critical shots in the closing minutes of Thursday’s district semifinal would not fall as the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team dropped the contest, 47-42, to Maquoketa Valley.
The Trojans went to the free throw line just four times and converted all four. Turkey Valley ended the year with a record of 14-8 while Maquoketa Valley improved to 16-7 and advanced to the district final Tuesday, Feb. 21, versus No. 2 North Linn.

Berland honored on retirement

For the past 47 years, Coach Berland has been the face and fixture of the Decorah girls tennis program while leading teams and our young people to unprecedented success.
Berland began his duties with the girls tennis program, with little tennis experience after being encouraged to do so by Superintendent Wayne Burns in 1976 after it had five seasons with multiple coaches.  With a compassion to support women’s athletics and to compete, Berland built the program to be one of the best in the state of Iowa highlighted by five state championships, fifteen regional championships and an overall dual match record of 503-122.

Vikes close regular season at 13-7

Closing out the regular season with back-to-back wins, the Decorah boys’ basketball team (13-7) is hoping to carry that momentum into the postseason. Thursday, the Vikes defeated Mason City (6-13) at home in the final regular season game 75-56.
Decorah struck first in the non-conference game Thursday; however, it was the Mohawks who took control with a 26-17 lead after the first period. The Vikes rallied in the second period to take the lead in the closing minute for a 41-38 advantage at halftime. Holding the visitors to just 18 points in the second half, Decorah pulled away for the easy victory.

Lynx end South Winn’s run

It was a heck of a season for the South Winn boys’ basketball team, putting together a 14-9 overall record, a 12-4 conference mark and finishing second in the UIC.
However, that right came to an end Thursday night in Coggen as the Warriors fell to No. 2 North Linn on the road, 97-64.

Making history, Decorah keglers roll on to state

Since conception in 2016, the Decorah bowling teams have made strides with consistent improvement and the dividends have paid off as for the first time in school history not just one, but both the girls’ and boys’ teams punched their tickets to the state team tournament. In addition, a record five individuals qualified for the state meet as well.

Warriors stay alive in postseason

The South Winn boys’ basketball team (14-8) edged a district win over Tripoli at home Monday, 72-63, to advance. Tripoli ends the season with a 13-9 overall record.
Both teams hit the hardwood running, with senior Keagen Streeter putting up the Warriors’ six points. Tripoli took the ball right to the room on each possession and claimed the advantage 19-12 after the opening period. South Winn fell behind by as many as seven in the second period, but a treys by Braiden Todd and a pair of threes by Kole Hageman spearheaded the comeback as the Warriors made up the difference and tied the game 31-31 on a Carson Wenthold bucket before the half.

Deep breath; TV survive EB, 48-45

It wasn’t exactly the start they were looking for the but final outcome of Monday’s Class 1A District 5 quarterfinal made Turkey Valley fans happy as the Trojan boys (14-8) took the first step toward a state tournament bid as the Trojans defeated East Buchanan at home, 48-45. East Buchanan finishes the season with a record of 10-12.
With the win, Turkey Valley will face Maquoketa Valley (15-7) in the semifinals Thursday, Feb. 16, on the Wildcats’ home floor at 7 p.m. The district final, which will pit the winner against either No. 2 North Linn (21-0) or South Winn (14-8) is Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m., at a location to be determined.

Second half rally spurs Vikes to win

After a close first half that ended in a tie, the Decorah boys’ basketball team (12-7, 6-4 NEIC) put together a strong second half, defeating West Delaware (12-10) on the road, 57-44, Tuesday night.
The Vikings start the playoffs Monday, Feb. 20, at home at 7 p.m., and will once again square off with West Delaware as they begin their quest for state in Class 3A Substate 4. The winner moves on to face the winner of Marion (16-4) and Vinton-Shellsburg (3-17) in the substate semifinal Thursday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m., at a location to be determined.
